Global economic and supply chain headwinds on land and sea continue to reshape the fundamental way raw material makes its way to the manufacturing floor. Ballast water equipment manufacturers are not immune to these dynamics. The De Nora BALPURE ® BWMS delivers cost benefits specific to energy consumption – a crucial factor when selecting a ballast water management system for a vessel, such as an oil or chemical tanker.
With the BALPURE ® BWMS, shipowners and operators get the unique advantage of a smart EC technology designed to help better manage operational expenses (OPEX) by mitigating expenses related to energy consumption.
Additionally, the BALPURE ® BWMS utilizes slip-stream technology, which allows electrolysis equipment to be remotely mounted – independent of the ballast lines. All other components can be separated into smaller sub-assemblies for installation flexibility. The equipment can be located conveniently throughout the vessel and filters can be placed in hazardous zone-rated areas, ensuring the BALPURE BWMS can be used on oil and chemical tankers.
The slip-stream technology is important. It enables better control over the inputs into the electrochlorination equipment. This provides an energy saving to the ship operator since the BWMS is never trying to create hypochlorite in substandard conditions. And, the dosing of hypochlorite can also be varied depending on how challenging the local water conditions are – enabling operators to comply with the most challenging waters, such as waters with low salinity or low temperature at the most optimum level.
Beyond ballast water management, De Nora helps maritime operators comply with IMO discharge standard for the treatment of offshore and marine sewage. Soon, De Nora will be launching its successor to the De Nora M55, a reliable workhorse of the industry. The new technology will once again will raise the standard by which all other sewage treatment plants will be measured by leveraging two unique technologies to help achieve compliance with new IMO requirements.
The customer was looking to fit 2 Ex Proof BWMSs to a tanker with a flowrate of 2 x 1500 m3/h. Space was at a premium so the customer was happy to discuss a single filter located in a deck house and a single slipstream BWMS located in the engine room.
Initially the customer was keen to choose two separate 1,500 m3/h systems but De Nora was able to demonstrate using operational system data, filter testing data and costed scenarios that a single 3,000 m3/h system was more suitable for their needs.
The BALPURE® BP3000-C system was successfully installed and delivered alongside specific CBT training for this installation. BALPURE offers flexibility in configuration so that the customer can decide what is the best fit for their vessel. Two different layouts options were considered, a hybrid and a distributed layout, and the customer opted for distributed layout that minimized the installation costs. The BALPURE system, based on slipstream EC technology and configured for hazardous area installations, is designed to effectively treat the ballast water on the main lines and to/from the APT with a single system.
