RO-RO Vessels and Ferries
RO-RO Vessels and Ferries

Most ships sail into port and have their cargos loaded directly into their final stowage location. At De Nora, we know that’s a luxury Ro-Ro or Ferries simply do not have.
De Nora’s Hyde GUARDIAN® Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) gives ship operators the advantage of continually moving ballast on and off the vessel to account for cargo movements, shifting tides, ramp angles and the inevitable challenges, which come with cargo moving around below the deck plates.
The system’s gravity ballasting and deballasting modes provide the flexibility to allow cargo to set the ballast flow rates, and our industry-exclusive Internal Transfer Mode makes sure as ballast is shifted in port or during the voyage, the BWMS does not inadvertently think it is being bypassed.
Since the Hyde GUARDIAN BWMS has been tested in the most rigorous waters around the globe – even in the harsh, ice-laden winter of the Baltic Sea – shipowners can go with confidence knowing their vessels are equipped with one of the world’s most efficient and easy-to-operate BWMS.
The Hyde GUARDIAN® BWMS was a pioneer in the effective use of ultraviolet (UV) light combined with a proprietary filtration system to deliver the flexibility needed to address a varying types of water quality around the world. And, by enabling vessel operators to adjust the UV treatment dose, the Hyde GUARDIAN BWMS can operate at peak efficiency, so no organisms are left untreated, and no excess energy is consumed.
Ideal for flow rates up to 1000 m3/h , the Hyde GUARDIAN® BWMS offers the maritime industry’s first automated performance analytics solution for ballast water management (BWM) – the Hyde GUARDIAN Data Log Analysis Utility (DLAU).
DLAU is a predictive maintenance tool, which monitors the health and performance of the entire Hyde GUARDIAN system. Data are shared with both the owner and De Nora technical specialists. Moreover, DLAU is part of a broader cloud-based technology suite – DE NORA VIA™ , which offers comprehensive remote support technology and enabling De Nora technical support specialists to remotely connect with crews in real time to provide support services for optimal BWMS operations.
With an intuitive interface, easy integration with the existing automation systems, and a first-of-its-kind feedback alarm to tell crews when the system is not operating inside the boundaries of the Type Approval testing, the Hyde GUARDIAN BWMS is a leap forward in BWM performance and results.
Additionally, De Nora offers the first automated performance analytics solution for ballast water management – the Hyde GUARDIAN Data Log Analysis Utility (DLAU). DLAU is a predictive maintenance tool, which monitors the health and performance of the entire Hyde GUARDIAN system. Data are shared with both the shipowner and De Nora technical specialists in the form of monthly reports. DLAU is part of a broader technology suite ¬– DE NORA VIA™ remote support technology, which allows technical support specialists to remotely connect with crews in real time and provide support services to maintain optimal BWMS operations.
In addition to De Nora’s water experts providing comprehensive BWMS solutions, De Nora also focuses its efforts on helping shipowners and operators comply with International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) standard for the treatment of offshore and marine sewage with proven, rugged technologies suited for the rigors of industrial platform and marine installations.

Case Study
With the first of three (and counting) installations in the fleet, Hyde Marine and P&O Ferries begin their working relationship with the installation on the M/V Norbank.
A new dedicated ballast pump was added to the ship for the purpose of ballast water treatment. However, the original pump was still and installed and could still move ballast water with no connection to the newly installed treatment system!
It is important to monitor any means by which the ballast water treatment system can be bypassed. The Ballast Water Management Plan required modification to incorporate the new ballast pump and provide guidance using the “old” pump.
